Message from Chancellor Boyce to Students

March 23, 2020 Letters from the Chancellor

Dear students,

Over the past few weeks, COVID-19 has rapidly reshaped our community and the world around us. We are suddenly living in unsettling and uncertain times. And yet, the airwaves and the internet are overflowing with countless stories of people making sacrifices, staying connected through technology, and inspiring others with their service, ingenuity and creativity. Even as we must stay apart physically, people are coming together to beat this virus.

You are why we are here. Students are the lifeblood of the University of Mississippi. But we know that you are facing challenges, disruptions and frustrations right now. Please know that we are here for you, and we are completely committed to seeing you through this semester.

Our faculty, staff and administrators have done an amazing job transitioning our learning platforms almost overnight from in-person learning to remote and online transmission. Our people are demonstrating extraordinary resolve in serving our students. I’m truly grateful for their commitment to your future.

I’ll be the first to tell you that many questions will arise as you work in this alternative learning environment. We have been working non-stop to be ready for those questions and are committed to providing you answers as quickly as possible. Are we going to hit some bumps and snags? Absolutely, but we are doing everything we can to figure it out so we can do what we are here to do — provide you an outstanding education that will enable you to build a better world.

To our Class of 2020: This is an emotional turn of events to transpire right as you should be celebrated. We’re so proud of you and all that you have accomplished during your years here. Please know that we are committed to honoring you, and we will share more details as those plans take shape. While the world may be somewhat different when we come out on the other side of this trying time, your roles as leaders and Rebels will not. Like Ole Miss alumni everywhere, I know you will move the world forward.

As we navigate this difficult time, know that our thoughts are with you every waking hour. Our resilience in the midst of crisis is a big reason why Ole Miss has thrived for 172 years and counting. I look forward to the day when we can all return to America’s most beautiful campus to celebrate together. Thank you for being part of our amazing university community.

Sincerely,

Glenn F. Boyce

Chancellor
