Our world faces grand challenges that no one discipline has all the answers — only collaboration and deep insights from multiple points of view will discover solutions. As a flagship university, we must take our collective strengths, leverage them, exploit multidisciplinary synergies, and in the process come up with imaginative solutions to these grand challenges.
In his November 2016 investiture speech, Chancellor Vitter announced the establishment of the UM Flagship Constellations Initiative to accelerate and inspire the pursuit of solutions to some of the world’s most complex challenges. UM will do this through the formation of innovative, cross-disciplinary research and creative achievement clusters of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners.
In January 2017, UM hosted town hall meetings on the Jackson and Oxford campuses with hundreds of interested faculty members. Later in spring 2017, UM will announce the constellation focus areas.
